Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I fingerprint and record details of my child?
A person’s fingerprints never change, and are one of the most valuable investigative tools available to law enforcement. In the unfortunate event of a missing child, fingerprints can be used to track the movements of the child and the abductor. During the crucial first moments after a child is discovered missing or seriously injured, parents are often too emotionally upset to remember details such as the child’s height, weight, and blood type. Our Child Identification Kits condense this information and more, into a compact file that can be simply handed to medical staff or the first police officer on the scene.

Aren’t child identification cards the same thing?
No. An identification card, while useful, is usually laminated or a credit card type design and therefore impossible to update without purchasing a new card and parents will oftern put a new purchase off indefinately. Our kits can be updated at will, and whenever new information comes to light. Our kits also hold much more information than a credit card size ID card.

Where do I keep the kit once it is completed?
Our Child ID Kits are usually kept in one safe location at home, easily accessible by both parents in the event of an emergency. Although certain occassions require a parent to carry the kit with them, for instance, when they go on holidays or to a crowded event or place where your child may get seperated from you like shopping centers.

How can an ID kit protect my child from abduction?
Fingerprinting and ID details won’t help to prevent abduction, or even keep a child from running away. However, fingerprinting a child will likely encourage dialogue between parents and the child about the issue of safety. Our Child Safety Activity Book, Video & CD provide excellent sources of information.

Isn’t fingerprinting children an invasion of privacy?
Some people think so but that's why our Child ID Kits are designed to be completed and stored by parents at home. This eliminates the need to take the child to the police station to have them fingerprinted, and eliminates the child’s fingerprints or details being kept on public record.

I’ve already photographed and videotaped my child. Isn’t that enough?
No. A photograph is a good start to locate a missing child, but other important details are also required. Video is not as helpful as a good photo. In the event of an accident or medical emergency, a photo is not important, but medical details are vital. If you are committed to taking advantage of every available tool for protecting your child, he or she should definately have a Child ID Kit. Fingerprints are one of the most effective tools for locating a missing person and medical details are crutial to immediate medical attention without confusion or delay. Blood type is one of the most important details when a child is seriously injured.

Why would I need a sample of my child's DNA?
DNA has now become a critical part in solving crimes. In the unlikely event that your child may be abducted DNA evidence can be matched to help locate a missing child. It's horrible to have to consider it, but in the extreme event that your child is ever killed, DNA may be the only way to positively identify a child's body. Our DNA storage technique is the most advanced available storing forensic quality samples of pure DNA. These samples can be stored at room temperature for decades and still be usable.

Why would I need to update my child's details?
During a young child’s formative years, his or her height, weight, hair color, dental information, and general appearance are among a number of items that need to be updated annually. Allergies can develop and medications can change as the child grows up. Changes to medications should be added immediately. Fingerprints, blood type and DNA are the only things about us that never change. Where we live, what we look like and our medical details change throughout our lives.

Will I ever need to purchase another Child ID kit?
Even though you can change details when necessary, we reccommend you replace the kit every few years. If there are too many details crossed out and added on, the card may become cluttered with too much information which could cause confusion to the police or medical staff who are refering to it. Their photo should definately be updated each year.

What if I’m just not comfortable with fingerprinting my child?
Then don't use the fingerprint section of the kits. The Child ID Kits are not just for child fingerprinting. The personal, medical, and physical information contained is comprehensive. Even if you decide not to use the fingerprinting section, the other charts should be completed and a recent photograph attached. Then, you will have the most useful and critical personal information about your child in case of an accident or medical emergency.

How can I educate my children about safety without frightening them?
While children need to be aware of possible dangers, they still need to feel comfortable in social situations and when meeting new people. Try to deliver the message in a serious yet fun way, emphasizing to the child just how many people care about his or her safety. Visit our Stranger Danger page to view our range of non-fearful child safety educational materials.

Who is Billy B. Smart?
Billy B. Smart is our company mascot and 'safety hero' teaching children all about safety and stranger danger in a non threatening and fun way. The Billy B. Smart range of educational material is an excellent way of introducing children to the issue of strangers. Billy has a safety activity book, a safety video, a safe n' sound sing along CD and also a safety poster and emergency phone numbers fridge magnet. After the activity book has been completed, the child's parents or carer can sign the enclosed 'certificate of achievement' and display it proudly in the child's bedroom. The certificate states that the child has learned the '10 Important Rules of Safety'.

Is there any help for fund raising events?

Yes. Fundraisers can purchase kits at a discounted price. More than 10 kits are discounted and the more you buy the cheaper they become. They are an excellent fund raising activity because not only do you make some money, the event opens dialogue with the children about danger strangers can impose. You can also phone the local police and ask if one could attend your event and give a talk about stranger danger and also help fingerprint the children and take DNA swabs.

Can I purchase products without using a credit card?
Yes. Through our online payment section you can pay directly from your bank account.
